Position: Education Leader Summer Placements


Position Start Date:

Work Schedule:

Full time hours, working weekends and holidays.

  • Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License is an asset
  • Must be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment (end of Labour Day weekend)
  • Must obtain a RCMP criminal record check
  • Must not hold another full-time summer job
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office is essential.
  • Proven ability as a self-starter with the ability to motivate self and others.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Commitment to educating the general public with an excited and positive attitude
  • Proven ability to communicate and engage with children
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with all levels of the organization and general public.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Public speaking skills with the ability to deliver educational programs to various groups.
Major Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the delivery of all aspects of Kid’s Camps.
  • Animal handling for education programs - must be comfortable handling reptiles, birds of prey and insects (relevant training will be provided).
  • Deliver interpretive/educational programs to schools and the general public, focusing on preschool, kindergarten, primary and high school classes.
  • Deliver a variety of park “Outreach Programs.”
  • Deliver Birthday Parties
  • Must be available to work weekends
  • Participate in all Park “Special Events” which occur during most holidays
  • Insure the cleanliness of the Wildlife Education Centre
  • Assist in the delivery of the Wildlife Rangers Pin Collectors Club
  • Assist in the delivery of interactive activities in the Wildlife Education Centre
  • Create and participate in content creation for social media platforms
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Position: Guest Services Coordinator


Position Start Date:

ASAP

Work Schedule:

Up to 40 hours per week. May be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays. 

Salary Grade 

To be determined. Position is exempt from the CUPE Local 900 Collective Agreement.

Guest Services Supervisor

  • Training and scheduling of staff
  • Monitoring and maintaining inventory
  • Ordering of supplies as needed
  • Gift Shop operation

  • Processing guest enquires
  • Maintain the racking of displayed brochures
  • Other duties as directed
Criteria for Applicant:
  • Two years retail experience
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Be able to work well in a group or on your own
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must provide a Criminal Records Check
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Valid BC Drivers license

 

Position: 2 part time facilities laborers / grounds keepers

$15.65 per hour, plus 11% in lieu of benefits. Position is a union position: CUPE Local 900

Facilities Supervisor

  • Working knowledge of all aspects of animal health and care, including reproductive habits, physiology, behaviour, nutrition, pathology and parasitism of mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles
  • Good observational skills with the ability to ensure animals meet standards of good health and ability to note any deviations in normal physical or psychological health
  • Basic understanding of conservation philosophy
  • Must be able to work safely with wildlife, including the ability to participate in medical treatment and preventative medication for animals
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations
  • Thorough knowledge of hazards and safety precautions for work performed
  • Good oral and written communication skills, and good interpersonal skills

 

Major Responsibilities:
  • Under specific direction delivers effective health and welfare practices for Park Wildlife and Wildlife Rehabilitation Program while at the same time provides some work direction to volunteers.
  • Follow established policies and procedures and deliver proper diet, required level of cleanliness, enrichment and hygiene of exhibits
  • Maintain zookeeper work areas to ensure a professional level of hygiene from a veterinary and food-safe perspective
  • Maintain exhibits and animal care facilities to required standards
  • Carry out procedures to ensure cleanliness of service yards and building
  • Maintain positive relationship with park staff, veterinarian and guests
  • Communicate in a timely way with department staff and veterinarians and assist in administering treatments, medications and procedures as required
  • Provide support for education and interpretation at the park
  • Follow established policies and procedures with regard to safe movement of animals within and outside the park
  • Maintain daily digital records in ZIMS
  • Participate in and provide some work direction in conservation programs such as Burrowing Owl Captive Breeding and Wildlife Rehabilitation
  • Contribute to efficient operation of park by minimizing waste and maintaining tools and equipment
  • Complete regular feed inventory, ordering feed as required
  • Strive to enhance knowledge and skills pertinent to animals on exhibit
  • Follow established policies and procedures to ensure safety of animals, public and staff
  • Other responsibilities and duties as required

  • Must be registered as a full time post-secondary student in the previous academic year and returning to school on a full time basis in the next academic year.
  • Must be a post-secondary student, but not attending full time classes while participating in their placement at BCWP
  • Must be between 16 and 30 years of age at the time of intake
  • Must be able to meet the eligibility requirements of the program for which they are approved
  • Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License and submit a drivers abstract
  • Must be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment (end of Labour Day weekend)
  • Must obtain a RCMP criminal record check
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada and be a BC resident
  • Must not hold another full time summer job
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of native, invasive and ornamental plant species
  • Knowledge of non-pesticide alternatives for weed control
  • Basic understanding of conservation philosophy
  • Must be able to work safely around wildlife
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations
  • Thorough knowledge of hazards and safety precautions for work performed
  • Good oral and written communication skills, and good interpersonal skills

  • Provide support for education and interpretation at the park
  • Strive to enhance landscaping, maintenance and planning knowledge and skills
  • Follow established policies and procedures to ensure safety of animals, public and staff
